John Wooden's last maxim: Love God and Love Others

Friday 30th of July 2010 11:39:00 AM

Current UCLA men's basketball coach Ben Howland described Wooden as a humble man. "His basic nature was love," Howland said. Wooden's pastor, Dudley Rutherford, assured the crowd of 4,000 gathered at Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA campus, of his parishioner's eternal destination. "Coach made it," Rutherford declared. "He is there [in heaven] not because he was a good teacher . . . or won basketball games. He is in heaven because he put his faith and trust in Jesus Christ." Rutherford gestured to the record 10 NCAA national championship banners won by Wooden's teams that hang in Pauley Pavilion [more...

Whether He Likes It or Not, Obama Must Command (We need a plan for victory in Afghanistan)

We didn’t need this. By “we,” I mean the large majority of citizens who want America to succeed in Afghanistan. By “this,” I mean the Rolling Stone article that quoted Gen. Stanley McChrystal and his aides saying uncomplimentary things about Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and other civilian officials. It’s true that most of the negative remarks were attributed to staffers rather than to McChrystal himself. And it’s true that none of them amounts to insubordination or refusal to carry out orders, the offense for which Gens. George McClellan and Douglas MacArthur were appropriately fired. But a commander has the responsibility...

The Rush Limbaugh Victory

THERE are many theories for why very conservative Republicans seem to be doing so well lately, taking their party’s Senate nominations in Florida, Kentucky and Utah, and beating Democrats head-to-head in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia. Some attribute this to a generalized anti-incumbent mood. Others say it reflects the tendency of parties in power to falter in midterm elections. Recently it has been fashionable to ascribe right-wing success to the Tea Party movement. But the most obvious explanation is the one that’s been conspicuously absent from the gusher of analysis. Republican success in 2010 can be boiled down to two...

A Congressional Medal of Cowardness?

A proposal to grant medals for "courageous restraint" to troops in Afghanistan who avoid deadly force at a risk to themselves has generated concern among U.S. soldiers and experts who worry it could embolden enemy fighters and confuse friendly forces.Lt. Col. Edward Sholtis, a spokesman for Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, who commands NATO forces in Afghanistan, said that no final decision has been made on the award, which is the brainchild of British Maj. Gen. Nick Carter."The idea is being reviewed at Headquarters ISAF," Sholtis said. "The idea is consistent with our approach. Our young men and women display remarkable...

NEW YORK – A federal appeals court on Wednesday handed the government a victory by temporarily blocking a judge's finding that Congress was wrong to halt federal funding to the activist group ACORN. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan also agreed to expedite the government's appeal of U.S. District Judge Nina Gershon's rulings that the funding cutoff was unconstitutional. Oral arguments were likely to occur before July. The appeals court's one-paragraph decision to freeze Gershon's two rulings that found Congress acted unconstitutionally will remain in place until the 2nd Circuit rules on the merits of the government's...

NJ school cancels cross-dressing fashion show after complaints Last Updated: 1:04 PM, April 13, 2010 Posted: 1:03 PM, April 13, 2010 A school superintendent in New Jersey said a "misunderstanding" led an elementary school teacher to mandate that all students -- including young boys -- dress as women in a now-canceled fashion show to honor Women's History Month, FOXNews.com reported Tuesday. "I wish the letter had been clearer and had been worded differently," Maple Shade Township School Superintendent Michael Livengood told FoxNews.com, referring to a letter sent home to the children's parents last week informing them of the assignment. "But...
